  by dorian hargrove, june 24, 2016. a san diego superior court judge has ordered the church of jehovah's witnesses, also known as the watchtower bible and tract society of pennsylvania, to pay $4000 a day for every day that it fails to produce documents requested in a civil lawsuit brought by former parishioner, osbaldo padron, who claims a church elder sexually abused him when he was seven years old.. in a june 23 ruling, expected to be made final today, judge richard strauss admonished the church for willfully ignoring a court order to produce all documents associated with a 1997 body of elders letter that church leaders sent to parishes around the world in a quest to learn about sexual abuse of children by church leaders.. over the course of the past year, the watchtower society and its lawyers have fought hard to keep the letter confidential, claiming that turning over the documents would infringe on the privacy of those mentioned in the letter that were not associated with the case.. in march 2015, the church turned over a heavily redacted version of the letter.

  Again they don't owe the 720k because when the appeal was accepted it put the trial court status on hold. Plus there are only 3 lawyers, which i believe only 1 is outside counsel.

  I agree. Again the decision of if Watchtower can compel CCJW from turning over the information will be an interesting decision. Already one appeals court has ruled that Watchtower and CCJW are distinct corporations and one does not have control over the other and therefore cannot compel one to turn over information to the other. It will be interesting to see the ruling that will be handed down by the appeals court in California. It also does appear that the 4k a day order due to this appeal stopped on or around 8/26/2016 when the appeals court agreed that they have jurisdiction to hear the appeal.

  Did you also mention how many people think that this is going to be a slam dunk to win these cases or as one person said it the legal equivalent of paint by numbers. I am so glad you didn't take my thoughts out of context and blown them out of proportion, oh wait yes you did. All I have said is the higher you put your hopes up that these will just be such easy victories the harder it will fall when it doesn't turn out the way you wanted it to be.

  I am sure many people here were disappointed when the Conti and Lopez cases were gutted by the appeals court, because everyone here felt that because a jury agreed with the plaintiffs that Watchtower was liable for the actions of a third party.

  These sanctions are on appeal. Watchtower says that they have no control over CCJW and that they cannot compel CCJW to turn over any documents.

  it is interesting. In the Pardon case it is now on appeal to see if Watchtower can force CCJW to produce documents.

  Again I never said that they will lose. I never said that they should give up. I said that people on here think that it will be a slam dunk or now will just be easy wins here on out. I said that they have a tough hill to climb but obviously they think that they have a shot at wining. I know that I didn't say, yay now watchtower is going down in a firey crash like everyone else is saying, so therefore everyone assumes that I think these firms will lose. It is reality that they have a hill to climb and it will be interesting to see how they fair.
